Test Your Guy's Period IQ
Happy VDay! One of our goals here at Sexy Period is to make it more acceptable to talk about periods in public. Seriously, 50% of the world menstruates so why are both men and women scared to bring up the topic? We're starting the conversation and that includes guys.....so here we go with our first ever survey designed for men with the Period IQ test! A huge thanks to the fabulous Alexandra DiLorenzo for helping us behind the scenes on this project!
Friday Fashion Find 11/18: Ginger + Liz nail polish
Let's face it: we love hot nail polish. It's so much fun to wave around a set of bright nails, but have you ever thought about the toxic ingredients we're inhailing as we paint? Enter Ginger + Liz: a toxin-free color powerhouse. I met the two ladies behind the brand at the Youth Entrepreneurship Summit in Kansas City earlier this week and they are fab. With names like Boss Lady, Reality Check, and Put A Ring On It, I don't know which shade to choose....looks like Caution!, featured below, will be a great place to start.

We're Seeing Stripes!
You may have noticed that we've been all about stripes lately. From our Friday Fashion Find to our tweets, we just can't get stripes out of our heads or our wardrobes. This is probably because Friday was stripes day at SPHQ, and we got a lot of our friends at One Davol to join in on the fun, although apparently some of them think that stripes and plaid are the same thing (I don't really think that's right, but we gave them a pass anyways).
Check out some of our pics!

What's Your Spirit Animal?
What's your spirit animal? Many people think that they don't have a spirit animal, but the truth is they just haven't explored enough to realize what their spirit animal is because EVERYONE has a spirit animal. To celebrate our inner spirit animals, here at SPHQ, the Sexy Period team threw another theme day...SPIRIT ANIMAL DAY!
The whole building got into the spirit and there were some rather creative outfits, which we loved, but we can't figure out if they were just dressing up for the cupcakes or if the guys at G-Form who work downstairs actually felt that their spirit animals were bumblebees and bunnies.
Now here's a little breakdown of the Sexy Period Team's spirit animals:
Julie was a Black Swan and made sure to clarify that her spirit animal had NOTHING to do with the movie. Catherine and Ramya were both in the feline family, Catherine rocking the leopard print and Ramya dressing as a Meer Kat. Sara was a wolf and even brought along a little wolf friend, and Melissa was an Octopus.

Peace, Love, and Happiness at SPHQ
Peace, love, and happiness describe a typical day at SPHQ, but yesterday we took it to another level and channeled our inner hippies with 70s day. Our celebration was complete with 70s tunes, tie-dye cupcakes, and flower power chocolate covered pretzels (we might have been trying to bribe people in our office to dress up with our 70s treats) .

Fancy Tuesday
Yes yes we know that it's Wednesday, BUT yesterday we had fancy Tuesday here at SPHQ, so naturally we have some fun pics to share! You might notice a few male additions to our photos, and no, they have not joined the Sexy Period team, but they were so jealous of our whiteout day that we decided to invite our neighbors at BetaSpring to join in on our themed days from now on.

Lunch date with Sexy Period : Beets
Summer has officially started and we are ready to romp around in the sunshine, go to the beach, wear cute summer dresses and have yummy picnics. So we are starting the summer with our newest addition to the Sexy Period blog: a little food, recipe, and lunch date advice.
We went to our local farmers market the other day to pick up some veggies for the week and found one of our favorites looking perfectly ripe: beets!

Ok, so we know what you're thinking beets=red=period and well, yes, we were thinking that but we were mostly thinking about how delicious and nutritious beets are. I mean come on, you pop them in the oven for a little while and the rock hard radish-like veggie turns into a moist, sweet and amazingly tasty and sophisticated vegetable. Now we could go on and on about how great beets are and how much we love them but instead (to save a little time and energy) here's a quick top 5 list of reasons to eat beets:
1. They taste good. Like really good.
2. Beets are both rich in antioxidants and an anti-inflammatory agent.
3. They're an aphrodisiac. Enough said.
4. You can eat the green part too and it's super delicious. Can you say two for the price of one???
5. They were presented by the Greeks to the sun god Apollo in the temple at Delphi (kind of random but definitely a fun fact).
(One minor downside: beet juice definitely stains, but there's always bleach).
Now, you didn't think that we decided to do this post just to brag to you about our fresh beets from the farmers market, did you? Not at all, we have the perfect recipe for your summertime picnic (which we will be having as soon as we get out of the office).
Roasted Beets with Kale and Quinoa
serves 2-3
1 bunch of red beets
1 bunch of golden beets
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup quinoa
1 cup water
Kale (whatever kind you wish and as much as you desire to fill you up!)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Goat cheese
Preheat the oven to 375 F. Cut greens off of the beets and save for a later use (they're really good, I swear). Wash the beets, scrubbing when necessary to remove all the dirt. Put the washed beets on a generous piece of tin foil and pour 1 tablespoon of the olive oil over them and sprinkle with salt and peper. Pull the tin foil around the beets completely covering them to make a little pouch and put in the oven to roast for 45 minutes or until tender when poked with a fork.
While you're waiting for the beets to roast, boil the water and then add the quinoa and turn the stove down to medium heat and cover, cooking until the water is completely dissolved and the quinoa is done, about 20-30 minutes.
Tear or cut the kale into bite sized pieces, put in a salad bowl and massage (yes, massage, that is a legitimate cooking term). In a small bowl mix together the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the lemon juice and season with salt and pepper to taste. Pour the lemon juice mixture over the kale and continue to massage.
When the beets are roasted and cooled, peel off the skin and cut into bite sized pieces. Add the beets to the kale, sprinkle the goat cheese on top and toss to mix adding salt and pepper as needed. If you wish, put the quinoa in with the kale mixture, but I prefer to keep it seperate and simple. Add some salt and pepper. Serve, eat, and enjoy!

Doesn't that look yummy? I can guarantee you it was, and it would probably be even better sitting on a picnic blanket outside!
Whiteout at SPHQ
Today at SPHQ (yes that is short for sexy period headquarters and we will be hashtagging it) we inaugurated our office with our first EVER theme day. Memorial Day has come and gone, and we have nothing to fear while wearing white when we are sporting our Sexy Period undies, so Ramya declared today a WHITEOUT. Any suggestions for next week's theme day??

Friday Fashion Find 5/6: Kentucky Derby Hat by Louise Green
The 137th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place tomorrow evening at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Since I am a Kentuckian at heart, it's an occasion to celebrate, regardless of where I am located (I even threw a Derby party in Guadalajara, Mexico when I studied abroad in college!). Since Derby day isn't complete without an iconic hat, it's only fitting that today's fashion find is a gorgeous black headpiece made by Louise Green.

We're also huge fans of DIY projects, and Derby Hats are super fun to make if you're feeling creative. Check out the simple, classic hat that I'll be donning this weekend.

Happy Friday! It's getting closer and closer to springtime here and we're itching to break out our bright colors. What's not to love about that?

Friday Fashion Find 2/25: Pagoda umbrellas
Today it rained the entire day. Of course my umbrella didn't make it through the morning, so I was soaked by the time I got to Blue State at 11 to get coffee with Caitlin. We were talking plans for the Sexy Period party next month (stay tuned for the official announcement!) and I was in the middle of a sentence when an umbrella caught my eye outside. Out of the hundreds of umbrellas I saw today, the shape of this one was so distinctive that I stopped mid sentence to check it out. It was actually black, but I found this striking black & white combo at Bella Umbrella. Maybe rainy days aren't so depressing after all....bring it on mother nature!

Friday Fashion Find 12/31: Twirl

Friday Fashion Find 12/17: The Impractical Accessory
Is it just us or did the holidays arrive twice as fast this year? We’re working on a few last minute construction details for the Preview Sale and will let you know as SOON as possible when they are available for pre-order! Think of it as a bonus holiday gift after you thought you’d opened them all already…
Ever tried to shop for the girl who has everything? Impractical accessories sometimes make the perfect gift for her or they are a nice surprise for someone who wouldn’t buy it for themselves. Our find of the week is this shabby chic tweed magnificent sash from Anthropologie. Though fruitcake and fancy electronics are nice, some of us may have lingered over the sash “add to bag” button quite a few times this week while trying to decide which color would go best with our best friend’s closet…

Friday Fashion Find 12/10: Kate Spade Trench
Anyone living north of Florida is obviously dealing with the change in weather temp. Once it got below 60 degrees in Providence I broke out my earmuffs and started drinking hot chamomile lemon tea. While perusing KateSpade.com, I stumbled upon this fitted trench coat that looks like it would be warm without making me feel like a giant marshmallow. Dear Kate, how do you manage to always keep it fun and classy?

Friday Fashion Find 11/26: Velour leggings
We get it. It’s the day after Thanksgiving, and that “food baby” is probably still sitting pretty in your stomach thanks to grandma’s stuffing and that extra (and oh-so-delicious) helping of pumpkin pie. So give yourself a little wiggle room while keeping it chic by rocking velour leggings like these ones from Kay Unger. Hey, these leggings are so fabulous, we’re guiltlessly digging into Thanksgiving leftovers already!

Friday Fashion Find 11/19: Chunky Jewelry
We know you love to make a statement, so why not let your accessories do it for you this time? Chunky jewelry is the glam way to dress up a classic outfit this season. Pair your everyday pieces with oversized rings or attention-grabbing bracelets like this gem we found at piperlime.com!

Our favorite Halloween costume
Some people are more imaginative than others when it comes to Halloween costumes… Case in point, I was a princess 5 years in a row. The award for best costume this year goes to our friend Marie who surprised us with the idea to wear a sexy dress with a period in front. Definitely the most glamorous ensemble of the night don’t you think? This girl is sexy. Period.

Friday Fashion Find 10/29: Berk’s Shoes
What can we say, Berk’s clothing and shoe shop on Thayer Street (Providence) has stolen our heart, but that’s old news. We love the unique brands they supply and the chic feminine clothing that stocks their racks and fills their shelves. And oh, the shoes—from Converse All Stars to Steve Madden pumps to Frye boots, they’ve got it. What more could a girl want? Julie even rocked a pretty blue floral dress from Berk’s in our stop motion film that’ll be coming to our homepage very soon. Keep an eye out for the stop motion and check out Berk’s on Thayer St. in Providence or in Harvard Square to keep you busy in the meantime!!
PS–Berk’s has guys’ shoes too!

Friday Fashion Find 10/22: Bright dahlia pencil skirt
Okay, okay I know… we just featured a skirt from J Crew last week, but the truth is that we’re kind of obsessed with their style this season. I popped into the store in Providence and it was love at first sight with this double-serge wool pencil skirt in the bright dahlia color below. I always find it challenging to find clothes that fit in the professional and fashionable category, so I couldn’t help but grab this one for my winter wardrobe. I’m thinking of pairing it with black patterned tights and heels…always better to be overdressed than underdressed, right?

Sneak peak: Lights, camera, action!
We spent about 8 hours one day last week shooting photos for a stop motion video that’s going on our new website homepage. Our photographer, Isaac, was amazing as he took over 10,000 photos and never once told me to shut up and smile. Thanks to Caitlin for directing the action and for writing over 100 words in her beautiful handwriting! Thanks to Yaz for stepping in at the last minute and a hug goes to Marie and Kristin who loaned us some dazzling accessories for the shoot. Check back in a few weeks to see the real deal!

Inspiration
Guess what’s on the horizon here at Sexy Period HQ? It’s time to think about photography! I decided that it would be helpful to create a collage that reflects our fashion sense. Here’s a sneak peek inside our world as we redesign the website and prepare for photo shoots.

Celebs have gotten into the new trend as well. Pick up a matching pair at your favorite jewelry store or get creative for more sentimental meaning, like this customizable bracelet by ImBlessed that we found on etsy.com!

Urban Dictionary? More like Urban Fictionary.
So the other day Julie and I were doing a little video chatting, just getting things in order and such. We’ve been doing some research on Search Engine Optimization…basically just how to get Sexy Period up in the Google results so that you don’t have to click through the 17th “o” to see our page. Anyways, as we were vid chatting I typed into Google “period panties” just to see what would pop up. And wouldn’t you know it, urban dictionary had the nerve to be on the top of the first page of results.
Do you know what it said? Why don’t you take a guess?? Alright, I’ll tell you. Quote, “Panties that girls wear, that are not cute, during their period, or menstral, so they don’t ruin the pretty ones.” So we thought this was pretty funny. First of all, because Sexy Period is like the uber-arch-nemesis of this definition. Actually, first of all should probably be because whoever wrote this spelled “menstrual” wrong. So I think it’s pretty clear they haven’t done their research. But wait ‘til you hear the synonyms: “granny panties,” “draws,” “leakage proof,” “nasty draws,” and, my personal favorite, “no sex draws.”
Well at least they got the leakage proof right. Oh, and what did I hear you ask? How do you use that in a sentence? Let me tell you what Urban Dictionary says: “I have a separate drawer for my period panties.”
Sigh. Urban dictionary, you’re gonna need some revisions very, very soon…
Homemade by Eulie for the honeymoon
Jaz and Joe practically waltzed down the aisle on March 13 as they tied the knot in Kemah, Texas. Jaz was my freshmen roomie and we lived in the J^3 house together senior year, so we’re practically family. While I spent four years looking for Mr. Perfect at Brown (and failed), Jaz logged impressive phone time as she and Joe did the long-distance thing. All that dedication paid off as they exchanged vows and are now on their way to a happily ever after.

The bachelorette party included lingerie gifts for the bride, so I decided to be creative. Although this pair isn’t made with functional fabrics, it has a sequin waistband and a sultry, sheer back. Nothing like one-of-a-kind underpinnings to spice up the honeymoon…

Congrats Jaz! Hope you enjoy your custom undies and best wishes as a Mrs!
