DIY: Poofs!
You might have seen on our Facebook or Twitter that we were really excited about Catherine's awesome poufs that she made for our models (and we might have even been modeling them ourselves...). Since we think they are so cute and deserve even more attention, and since you probably want to make about a dozen of them yourself, here is a DIY, make your own pouf post. (Note: Catherine was not very precise in her crafting, as crafting should never be a precise science since it's supposed to be FUN, so don't take any quantities or measurements all too seriously).
Materials and Tools:
A bunch of tulle (preferably in fun colors...we chose pink because well, come on)
Something round (about 5 inches in diameter) for tracing
Scissors
Pencil
Needle
Thread (hopefully something that matches the tulle color that you picked out)
Step 1: Cut out a "thick stack" of tulle circles that you traced using the pencil and circular object

Step 2: Fold the circular pieces in quarters. You can see Catherine demonstrating in the picture below.

Step 3: Use the needle and thread to sew the quartered pieces of tulle together so that they overlap properly.

Step 4: Admire your finished pouf! Also if you want to add a hair clip or bobby pin, just sew it on!

How fun are poufs?
Friday Fashion Find 7/8: A.L.C. Maxi Dress
Maxi dresses are great, but sometimes we want to show a little leg, in an understated way of course. So what's the solution? A massive slit! This dress from A.L.C. is flirty yet still a little covered up, and it is perfect for not only a summer night but also a fall day. A great dress that's flattering, comfortable, appropriate for all seasons and a little sexy...we might just be getting one in every color.

Friday Fashion Find 6/24: Reed Krakoff Techno Green Mini Shoulder Bag
'Woah that green color is awesome' was the first thing that we blurted out when we saw this adorable mini shoulder bag from Reed Krakoff, and after that we realized that it's not the just the color that is awesome, but the style and the mini size. Reed Krakoff has totally hit the nail on the head with the designs of his spring bags, and this is our favorite from the collection that started just over a year ago. Check it out here.

Friday Fashion Find 6/17: The Frolic and Play Robe
It's summer and it's hot out and when you get out of the shower the last thing you want to put on is a heavy robe. That is precisely why we love this robe from Between the Sheets. It's simple and casual (not the usual silky number) and the perfect thing to wear over your Sexy Period undies while you are lounging around the house. What we love even more is the awesome and entrepreneurial designer (who also gives some great advice to a fellow entrepreneur) Layla L’obatti. Layla not only designs but also created her own fashion show concept while still studying at FIT...wow!

Friday Fashion Find 5/6: Kentucky Derby Hat by Louise Green
The 137th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place tomorrow evening at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Since I am a Kentuckian at heart, it's an occasion to celebrate, regardless of where I am located (I even threw a Derby party in Guadalajara, Mexico when I studied abroad in college!). Since Derby day isn't complete without an iconic hat, it's only fitting that today's fashion find is a gorgeous black headpiece made by Louise Green.

We're also huge fans of DIY projects, and Derby Hats are super fun to make if you're feeling creative. Check out the simple, classic hat that I'll be donning this weekend.

Meet Our Sales & Merchandising Intern: Christine Wallace
We loved our Sales & Merchandising Intern Christine Wallace the moment we saw her! Super chic and always trendy, this Johnson & Wales senior is spot on today’s fashion and is already looking to tomorrow’s catchy pieces. She’s got a great eye for design—whether glamming up the Preview Sale cards for Style Week or constructing functional pedestals for our models, Christine has got it covered. Read on to hear what she’s got to say about Barbies, the Greek Isles, and Anna Wintor.
What’s your favorite style of Sexy Period underwear?
Blossoming Beauty!
What motivated you to go into fashion merchandising?
I love the hustle and bustle of the fashion industry. It is an ever changing world that is constantly reinventing itself. That energy is infectious and inspirational to me. I always love a new challenge and I know I will never become stagnant in this industry. There are always new trends, new styles, and new consumers to market them too. Of course there is also my love for fashion which I’ve had from a very young age (my Barbies had more wardrobe changes than Lady Gaga).
What’s the last book you read?
“Anatomy of a Trend” by Henrik Vejlgaard.
Got any hobbies?
I love any DIY projects, whether it making something for my apartment, clothing, accessories, or
revamping old items to make them new again.
Let’s say you just won a vacation for free (lucky you!). Where would you go?
The Greek Isles. After watching Mamma Mia! and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants it’s definitely
a place I would like to experience for myself.
If you had to trade lives with someone for a year, who would you pick?
Anna Wintor, who wouldn’t want to be the editor-in-chief of Vogue?
How would you describe your style?
A mash-up of modern basics and cutting-edge fashion that is always complimented with accessories, especially scarves.
What’s your must-have comfort during that time of the month?
Chocolate of course!
Meet Our Marketing Coordinator: Caitlin Conn
Love the rockstar tone of our website, or maybe the chocolate smeared on CEO Julie’s face during the homepage stop motion film? You can thank our Marketing Coordinator Caitlin Conn for that. Currently a Brown University junior studying Psychology and Commerce, Organizations, & Entrepreneurship, Caitlin has a deep interest in consumer decisions in the marketplace and hopes to continue working in business post-graduation. Read on to see what she’s got to say about Nutella, sparkly nail polish, and Thoreau!
What motivated you to go into marketing?
I’m really interested in the way people perceive things and how that drives their individual decision-making. I’m also just a huge people person, so marketing is a happily-ever-after marriage of it all!
What’s the snack food you’re addicted to?
Pretzels dipped in Nutella…so bad…but soooo good.
What’s the television show you just can’t get enough of?
MODERN FAMILY!!! I’m absolutely addicted to watching it on Hulu…it makes my family seem semi-normal. I secretly channel Gloria as my sass inspiration…
Got any hobbies?
I’m kind of artsy, I like sketching in charcoal and making neat little beaded bracelets. Other than that, I love to play soccer and work out.
When you’re going out on the town, what’s your go-to piece you just have to wear?
I’m obsessed with this uber-glam OPI nail polish called “Bring on the bling.” I like to think it’s totally a Ke$ha color. That paired with my leather jacket is prime.
What’s playing on repeat on your iPod right now?
I think the play count’s a tie between Cali Cali Cali by Alyssa Bernal and Superluva by Starshell.
Let’s say you just won a vacation for free (lucky you!). Where would you go?
I’d travel all over Italy! I speak Italian so I really hope I can put it to some good use in the future! I’d want to travel starting in the fashion and industry-centered north and venture all the way down to the more rural south. My Grandma was born in southern Italy so I’d love to see her hometown someday.
What’s your favorite thing about being involved with Sexy Period?
Everyone who’s involved with Sexy Period is kind-hearted, driven, and has a great sense of humor. I love being a part of developing a company where everyone involved is so determined to the same baseline mission: bringing gorgeous, comfortable, OMG-moment-erasing underwear to the market that women everywhere will LOVE. The teamwork and innovative bubbling of ideas at Sexy Period is absolutely contagious.
What’s the best advice you ever got?
My aunt once gave me a bookmark quoting Thoreau that says, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.” I think that’s pretty right on.
Friday Fashion Find 3/11: Birchbox
Shopping with Birchbox is like shopping with your best friend who also just happens to be a makeup, haircare, and skincare specialist. With products and how-tos in the same place, what more could you ask for? Try out different beauty products when they send your lovely gift box filled with 4-5 samples each month. When you’re sure you love that luscious lipstick or that wonderful body butter, just go online and purchase it! And even better? You get rewards for everything you buy. Nice.

Meet Our Watercolor Artist: Pamela Baron
If your favorite style of Sexy Period panties is Blossoming Beauty, you’ve got one main woman to thank: Pamela Baron. She’s the RISD grad behind those wonderful watercolor flowers that adorn the Blossoming Beauty waistband. Not only is she a talented artist, but she’s also got a rocking sense of humor. Check out more of Pamela's work at her site, and read on to hear what she has to say about tape art, cross-country dads, and learning from each other.
What’s the snack food you’re addicted to?
Hands down, Comanzo & Co.’s Whole Wheat Pumpkin Biscotti. Locally made in Smithfield, RI and amazingly delicious! Seriously, these things make me have a better day.
What motivated you to become an artist?
I always thought I wanted to be a comic book artist until the late Al DeCredico taught me about abstract art. It was from there that I really began pushing the limits of what I could do and exploring myself as an artist.
What’s the last book you read?
“A Supposedly Funny Thing I’ll Never Do Again” by David Foster Wallace. So. Funny.
When you’re not busy being a fabulous artist, what do you like to do with your time?
I love doing Tape Art at the Providence Community Acupuncture Clinic, running outside when the weather is nice and baking for my friends and family.
Got any hobbies?
Glass blowing. I learned how in high school and worked throughout college at a local hot shop. It’s a strangely addictive hobby.
Tell us something embarrassing about yourself!
Well, when I was a rebellious teen, I attempted to sneak off with a boy. My plot failed miserably since my Dad caught me and he chased me around the neighborhood for hours. We both laugh about it now, but I sure put his high school cross-country days to test!
If you had to trade lives with someone for a year, who would you pick?
A competitive athlete. Dancers, marathon runners, gymnasts -- I have so much respect for the level of commitment those people have.
What’s the best advice you ever got?
People come together to teach each other lessons. It’s up to you to have the clarity to find out what those things are and learn.
What’s your favorite style of Sexy Period underwear?
I love the Blossoming Beauty in cheeky!
Friday Fashion Find 2/25: Pagoda umbrellas
Today it rained the entire day. Of course my umbrella didn't make it through the morning, so I was soaked by the time I got to Blue State at 11 to get coffee with Caitlin. We were talking plans for the Sexy Period party next month (stay tuned for the official announcement!) and I was in the middle of a sentence when an umbrella caught my eye outside. Out of the hundreds of umbrellas I saw today, the shape of this one was so distinctive that I stopped mid sentence to check it out. It was actually black, but I found this striking black & white combo at Bella Umbrella. Maybe rainy days aren't so depressing after all....bring it on mother nature!

Style Week Providence!
Style Week Providence was absolutely amazing. Not just because of the other fabulous accessory designers (check out this week’s Friday Fashion Find!), the extravagant runway shows, or the eye-catching showcase our Sexy Period models put on (though hey, none of those hurt)…but mostly because of the wonderful enthusiasm and excitement we got from all of you!!! The Sexy Period table was bubbling with women delightedly eyeing, holding, and learning about Sexy Period panties, chatting to each other and to us about how they were going to purchase a pair for themselves, their sisters, daughters, and friends! And we’re right there with them in our excitement. Here are some Style Week pictures to tide you (and us) over until our limited 500 pair Preview Sale Release only three very short days away!!
Women were ecstatic to learn how soft Sexy Period panties are!

Friday Fashion Find 1/28: Mallory Musante Shoes
Ever heard of hand painted shoes? Mallory Musante paints each and every one of her gorgeous signature heels as shown below. We met her last weekend at Style Week Providence and she told us about the shoe painting process. The amount of detail and thought that goes into every pair is impressive. We love the eye catching designs plus Mallory is super sweet and her enthusiasm for shoes is contagious. Check them out at www.mallorymusanteshoes.com!

Love Letters
Since we were featured on NPR's The Story with Dick Gordon last Thursday, we have received a flood of over 50 emails from listeners! Ladies (and guys), thanks for writing and keep them coming! Here are a few of our favorite notes:
Thanks for sticking with it when the guys thought this wasn't a "marketable" idea. I rarely get excited about new products and NEVER email companies just to gush - but the launch of your product is SO exciting. Just this morning I've been dealing with the "monthly spillage" issue and wondering, "how soon does THIS new pair of panties end up in the trash?" So thank you, thank you, thank you - can't wait to buy my first pair!! Hats off to you!!
Congratulations to Julie for persevering past the Brown University and Providence entrepreneurs meetings and staying
in this despite the materiel and manufacturing hassles. (Don't forget to make it in ALL sizes.) Believe in your dreams and you'll out-earn Oprah in a few years! You GO Girrl!!!
I heard your story on NPR and thought it was great! There is nothing about natural bodily functions to be embarrassed about -- I loved the story, your attitude, your enthusiasm, your inventiveness, your courage and hard work. Best of luck to you in this endeavor!
Hooray for your coverage (pun also intended) on "The Story"! So excited to spread the word about a small business with a great product.
Are you a publicly traded company and can I buy stock?
Just heard you on NPR's "The Story"... LOVE your story and am psyched to check out the undies!!! (I hate all the hand washing and ruined pairs!!!) Signed up to your e-list, but also just wanted to send an email to say: you go, girl!!!
Hello, I was just listening to you on NPR and had to write in. This is genius and I can't wait until ordering starts! Wish you both much success! p.s. as a Textile major I know that making those prototypes was INSANE (!!!)
Great idea, heard you on public radio today in Massachussetts. Good Luck! I hope that you will add a curvy model to your marketing campaign, as beautiful women come in all different sizes.
Love the product...but wheres the plus size? I heard about your company while listening to "The Story" on NPR on my way home from work. As soon as I came home I searched for your website, I had to see what you were talking about. I think your product and your idea is great. It makes sense to me and kind of made me feel a little more comfortable knowing I am not the only woman in the world with these problems. However, I also am a plus size woman and was a little saddened that your product does not seem to fit a size 28 girl. I know its your first product so I just wanted to voice my opinion that hopefully in the future you will be looking into expanding into plus sizes. I love your idea and am excited to see what you can do.
To the Sexy Period Ladies…. Wow, what an amazing idea! I am sure you are receiving many emails today. I heard your story on NPR last night and was absolutely jazzed about your revolutionary approach to period apparel!
A note to our curvy fans: Thanks for letting us know there is interest among plus size women! We will do our best in the future to introduce additional sizes and shine the spotlight on women of various shapes & sizes.
Meet Our Stylist: Jennie Kay Murphy
When we saw Jennie Kay do Laura’s styling for our first Sexy Period photoshoot, we had to do just about everything to restrain ourselves from holding her hostage for the sole purpose of making us look good every morning. Not only did she put effortless-looking curls into Laura’s hair but she also crafted killer makeup. Jennie owns her own salon in Rhode Island and has worked on everything from 27 Dresses to Jersey Boys to Snoop Dogg. With a total genuine personality to boot, we’d say Jennie’s the ultimate stylist in our book. Maybe if we buy her pistachios she’ll do our makeup every morning??
What’s your favorite thing about being involved with Sexy Period?
I really loved being involved with young motivated people. I know Sexy Period won’t be able to keep these panties on the shelf and I was really excited to be there for the 1st photoshoot.
What motivated you to become a stylist?
Believe it or not the first time I saw Mrs. Doubtfire and The Mask I said I wanted to do hair and makeup for films.
If you had to trade lives with someone for a year, who would you pick?
Tim Burton…I would like to know what goes on in his head.
What’s the snack food you’re addicted to?
Well I’m pregnant right now so it really depends on the day …….today maybe pistachios!
Got any hobbies?
I like crafts, yoga, and sitting in Barnes and Noble reading magazines.
What’s playing on repeat on your iPod right now?
Katy Perry and Sugarland.
What’s your favorite style of Sexy Period underwear?
Blossoming beauty!
What’s the best advice you ever got?
Don’t over analyze everything, and be patient.
Be sure to check out Jennie’s site at www.jenniekaybeauty.com!
Meet Our Model: Laura Frazier
Laura Frazier is the gorgeous model of Sexy Period’s first fashion photos! As a proud mom of a little boy and a passionate lover of pumpkin pie, Laura’s definitely more than just a pretty face. Her bubbly, can-do personality wowed us from the start (she even braved a skyscraper balcony in the middle of winter to try and get some Sexy Period fashion shots)! Read on to hear what Laura’s got to say about tickling, the Spice Girls, and growing up as the snarly brace-faced redhead.
What’s your must-have comfort during that time of the month?
A romantic comedy, my fiancé cuddling on the couch, and a BIG bowl of Mint Chocolate Chip Ice cream keeps me happy.
What motivated you to become a model?
Growing up I was the snarly red head with the face full of freckles and a mouth full of braces, but everything about the fashion industry and modeling made me stand in awe. Needless to say, I never figured I’d be where I am today. When I was in high school, I dated a guy that was absolutely no good for me. Over time the relationship fell to pieces but I gave birth to an amazing little boy. I promised myself I am going to show my son, no matter what anyone says, no matter who you are, you can live the life you want to live. All it takes is an outgoing personality, the motivation to reach for the stars, and the determination to not let anything stand in your way. Four years later here I am!
If someone wants to make you laugh, they’ve just got to…
Tickle me! Sometimes when designers are doing fittings I have to hold in laughs from them touching me. I’ve even had some friends take pictures of me with the oddest looks on my face trying to hold it in.
What’s your favorite thing about being involved with Sexy Period?
Not only are the underwear super cute and comfy, but the people that are behind the scenes creating this one-of-a-kind underwear are absolutely amazing.
What’s playing on repeat on your iPod right now?
Fly Like a G6. I go crazy dancing in the car when the song comes on. People driving by must think I am absolutely insane.
If you had to trade lives with someone for a year, who would you pick?
Victoria Beckham! Just because David Beckham is so yummy and she is such a strong, beautiful woman. Come on now… what woman doesn’t have a little Spice Girl in them. GIRL POWER!
What’s the snack food you’re addicted to?
Pumpkin Pie with a load of whipped cream on top would have to be at the top of the list. Between me and my fiancé we’ll finish a pie in one sitting. Yes… he gives me the last piece. :)
What’s your favorite style of Sexy Period underwear?
Friday Night Fabulous. Why you ask? Doesn’t the name explain it all! ;)
*Laura's photo is by Trisha Kelley Photography
Meet Our Photographer: Daniel Gagnon
Daniel Gagnon is the man behind the lens for Sexy Period’s first ever fashion photos! Between rocking the runway as a fresh photographer and giving back through his day job, we don’t know how he finds the time to be as cool as he is. Check out more of Daniel’s stunning work at www.danielgagnonphoto.com and read on to hear what he’s got to say about Mean Girls, moisturizing, and Sexy Period.
What’s the snack food you’re addicted to?
Is McDonalds a snack!? Because I’m definitely addicted to that!!! In fact, I’m addicted to ALL fast food, WHICH I have coincidentally given up as my New Year’s resolution – 13 days and counting!
If someone wants to make you laugh, they’ve just got to…
Quote one of my favorite movies like Baby Mama or Mean Girls.
When you’re not busy being a fabulous photographer, what do you like to do with your time?
I’m a high school art teacher by day and I wouldn’t give it up for the world.
When you’re going out on the town, what’s your go-to piece you just have to wear?
My black jacket from my trip to Tokyo, Japan. It’s a solid compliment-getter every time.
How would you describe your style?
Clean and sophisticated with an element of the unexpected.
Let’s say you just won a vacation (lucky you!). Where would you go?
I’d be boarding a plane to Europe on a backpacking excursion through France and Italy then hopping over to Greece.
What’s your favorite thing about being involved with Sexy Period?
The fact that I can say I helped this company in its infancy as it grows into a nationally recognized brand.
What’s the best advice you ever got?
Moisturize. Every day.
Our favorite Halloween costume
Some people are more imaginative than others when it comes to Halloween costumes… Case in point, I was a princess 5 years in a row. The award for best costume this year goes to our friend Marie who surprised us with the idea to wear a sexy dress with a period in front. Definitely the most glamorous ensemble of the night don’t you think? This girl is sexy. Period.

Friday Fashion Find 10/29: Berk’s Shoes
What can we say, Berk’s clothing and shoe shop on Thayer Street (Providence) has stolen our heart, but that’s old news. We love the unique brands they supply and the chic feminine clothing that stocks their racks and fills their shelves. And oh, the shoes—from Converse All Stars to Steve Madden pumps to Frye boots, they’ve got it. What more could a girl want? Julie even rocked a pretty blue floral dress from Berk’s in our stop motion film that’ll be coming to our homepage very soon. Keep an eye out for the stop motion and check out Berk’s on Thayer St. in Providence or in Harvard Square to keep you busy in the meantime!!
PS–Berk’s has guys’ shoes too!

Friday Fashion Find 10/22: Bright dahlia pencil skirt
Okay, okay I know… we just featured a skirt from J Crew last week, but the truth is that we’re kind of obsessed with their style this season. I popped into the store in Providence and it was love at first sight with this double-serge wool pencil skirt in the bright dahlia color below. I always find it challenging to find clothes that fit in the professional and fashionable category, so I couldn’t help but grab this one for my winter wardrobe. I’m thinking of pairing it with black patterned tights and heels…always better to be overdressed than underdressed, right?

Friday Fashion Find 10/15: Lace Mini
Craving instant prettiness? Then throw on a lace miniskirt like the Severn lace mini we found at jcrew.com. We love the delicate floral pattern that makes this lace not too over-the-top, not too understated, but oh just right. Don the slate shade for an all-year-round gorgeous femme look or go bold with summit green and be certain to stand out amongst those fiery autumn leaves.

Inspiration
Guess what’s on the horizon here at Sexy Period HQ? It’s time to think about photography! I decided that it would be helpful to create a collage that reflects our fashion sense. Here’s a sneak peek inside our world as we redesign the website and prepare for photo shoots.

What’s our social media game plan?
Lucky us! We’ve been chosen to be a case study for one of Bentley University’s social media classes taught by our friend Mari Anne Snow. Although we’ve got a couple ideas already in the works, four amazing teams are going to put their thinking caps on and will compete against each other to create the best social media plan for Sexy Period to launch next year. Caitlin and I made a presentation on Thursday to the class with all the inside details that they need to know to get rolling with the project.
Bentley rockstars: if you’re reading this, here’s a big thank you in advance! We can’t wait to see where this goes.
Friday Fashion Find 8/20: Double v-neck shirts
Sometimes, less is more. Show off those tanned shoulders with a flattering v-front and v-back shirt like the one we’ve found at urbanoutfitters.com for just $16. Daring, yet classy. Check and check.

Friday Fashion Find 8/13: Diana by Lauren Merkin
Who said Friday the 13th was unlucky? With Diana, there’s no way that you’ll be caught off guard on this Friday. We love Lauren Merkin’s clutch slash purse slash crossbody shoulderbag in this versatile accessory that comes in every shade of the handbag rainbow.
Though at $195 it may be a tad pricy for our entrepreneur budgets, we can think of tons of ways to rationalize this mini splurge. A) You can use this bag anywhere, anytime. B) Lauren Merkin’s a Brown grad (like us)! C) C’mon…it’s a bag…and it’s so darn cute.

Homemade by Eulie for the honeymoon
Jaz and Joe practically waltzed down the aisle on March 13 as they tied the knot in Kemah, Texas. Jaz was my freshmen roomie and we lived in the J^3 house together senior year, so we’re practically family. While I spent four years looking for Mr. Perfect at Brown (and failed), Jaz logged impressive phone time as she and Joe did the long-distance thing. All that dedication paid off as they exchanged vows and are now on their way to a happily ever after.

The bachelorette party included lingerie gifts for the bride, so I decided to be creative. Although this pair isn’t made with functional fabrics, it has a sequin waistband and a sultry, sheer back. Nothing like one-of-a-kind underpinnings to spice up the honeymoon…

Congrats Jaz! Hope you enjoy your custom undies and best wishes as a Mrs!
God should have created Sexy Period when he created women - Kim C.
